Hello there! Sorry, I have been away for awhile but again I wasn’t really away! I have been focusing a little more on youtube instead of blogging because I hadn’t had the time to really sit down and type.
However, I have decided that blogging will be focused on mainly two things which are fashion and more personal things that I would like to share about myself or thoughts.
So here are some updates to those who follows my blog but not my youtube, haha!
- I have resigned from 3-year job Supermodels Secrets
- I have resumed my makeup studies to finish it up(finishing this week!)
- I have been helping my dad at his restaurant in Taipan
- I am a freelance makeup artist at the moment and still a bridal makeup artist assistant
- I am currently pursuing a new hobby that I love, baking!
- I am currently taking pole and latin classes
Honestly, although I love my job but I have to say that these 4 months has been the MOST fruitful, hectic and challenging month of my life!
Although I am not working a 9-5pm job anymore, and I do OT a lot when I worked full time, haha, but it has been the busiest time of my life and I love it! Simply because I am doing what I love, and exploring many new things.
I know many ppl asked me what am I doing with my life and it seems like it is all over the place, but it is not!
I also felt VERY happy and VERY sad at the same time during this season because there will always be negative people around you and sadly more negative and critical people around compared to positive people.
I have many people trying to stop me from doing what I love. You know what I dislike the most? When I tell people what I am doing (a lot of things) and they start to roll their eyes at me and say “errr..okay it seems like you don’t know what you want and not focused” or like “You know in life, I was once like you I like so many things, but learn from me and focus on one thing at a time”
I KNOW what is the difference being indecisive and being clear with what I want even if it is many!
I always believe in chasing your dreams, but you definitely need to take action. If you want to chase your dreams but don’t do anything and wait for an opportunity to come, it won’t!
Like I said in my video and in my previous post before, I was allowed to study what I want because everyone looked down on makeup and beauty thinking you can’t survive because it has no diploma and degree. What’s worse? People telling me “Oh, you no degree? No degree to future” WHATTTTTTT
After college, when I starting working I enrolled into school MYSELF because I knew this is what I wanted!
Now that I have resigned from work, it was a HUGE risk and the first 3 months was hard to survive without a steady income especially when I have bene working for many years. Savings aren’t enough to keep me through because remember I had to pay for my school fees, transportation, paid for my LASIK as well.
But thankfully I pulled through with some money from my makeup job, and then I became the owner of my dad’s restaurant Thai Corner (SSM APPROVED) YAY and recently have been managing it as well! I am not there every weekday but weekend night definitely there, and I am hoping to revamp the restaurant to be better as well. From there I have some income to survive too!
Then came a Eureka moment. I had no full-time job. I can do whatever I want and arrange my time! I am flexible! I thought to myself that makeup is good but not Every day I have makeup jobs, so what else can I do that I would like and earn at the same time?
Then I thought about all the workshops I have been stalking in Instagram. Calligraphy, Flower making (bridal bouquet), Baking, Making Soaps and much more! I have always loved artsy stuff, drawing and etc. So, therefore, I decided to venture into baking because of my love for stalking flower buttercream and sugar flower cakes!
I told myself I have this familiar feeling. When I was doing design, I wasn’t thinking about design but 24/7 watching makeup videos!
AND IT IS THE SAME with baking! I have always been stalking so many cake Instagrammers so why not I stop staring at em and start baking em! So I told myself that if I want this, I gotta invest in myself. Meaning, I will be tight with money but I gotta work hard and not just treat it as a for fun workshop although yes I did had fun but to make the workshop worth it. Right away, I took a private baking class with Bakesandinks and that is where I met Michelle Young! I paid for a 2-day private workshop on how to make drip cake and flower buttercream.
It was the BEST feeling ever making me wish I studied baking earlier! It was so therapeutic to make those buttercream flowers! I enjoyed it so much so I told myself I could do this! I could do this AND makeup!
So, therefore, I decided to learn this and perhaps make it another way for me to earn income like makeup as well and have flexible time to do MORE things that I love such as Youtube, Pole fitness, and Latin class!
Thankfully, after I became more successful in makeup, my parents trusted me and start to believe in me so when I told them baking is another thing I wanted to pursue they told me they would sponsor me and so they bought me all the equipment I needed to start my baking journey =’))
Not only that, after I posted a few photos – I had at least 3 clients asking me to bake for them! I am so so thankful for this opportunity. I am not the best yet but I am thankful those who believes and trusts in me and in a big depth of gratitude to Michelle Young for helping me to start this journey! I had so much fun for my first baking experience with her during the private workshop and her passion is also what motivated me, hearing her story and she is extremely passionate about doing what she loves and making delicious and beautiful cakes inside and out!
It is definitely still a tough journey for me as I am still investing in myself, as I just paid A WHOLE lot of money for another 2 more workshop for two famous bakers from overseas! But I know it will be worth it seeing how one private workshop has changed my life!
I wanted to learn flower arrangements too, almost paid 6k for the FULL course but I told myself nooo. I have found baking first, so unless I practice it and become familiar with it as much as I am familiar with makeup already then only I will venture into flower arrangements!
Right now I will focus on makeup and baking while managing my dad’s restaurant! Meanwhile, I am enjoying my “ME TIME” staying fit with Pole Fitness and Latin!
I think people always misunderstand pole fitness. People think we are strippers and all being kinky but Pole helped me a lot with confidence as well overcome fear. It is such a STRONG sport that helped build so much confidence. Normally in many sports, like I used to be in cheerleading it is all about teamwork and confidence but pole fitness is so much about self-growth and CONFIDENCE in yourself. To be brave and feminine and strong. I love it!
Latin, is another type of dance that I have always WANTED to learn before cheer, pole or any kind of dance but never had the chance because most of the groups are older people and I felt out of place but finally I found someone (from the same generation) although she is older and my classmates are all collegemates as well! Not only that, the studio is in Sunway!
So today, let me give you a few tips if you want to do what you love
1. Do research (LOADS OF EM)
Research is the most important thing of all. Even when I was a designer I did a lot of research before coming up with a design. When I am coming up with a new makeup look, I do research. When I plan for a youtube video I do a lot of research as well and plan out what video to make, draw sketches of looks that I want to achieve.
Research could take years! Before I start baking, I was already doing my own research a few years back on the bakers and workshops on Instagram! I stalk them, study them and ask them questions! I even stalked many bakers that are in KL, but from Terengganu and JB Malay bakers who are SUPERB! Stalk them to a point you remember their names, the cakes they make the style of makeup they do!
Networking as an adult is the most important regardless if you are an introvert – if you wanna get exposure and learn more you would need to go above and beyond. The one time I had a big Eureka moment was when I was with my boyfriend Guo Unn. So here is the story, you know he is a DJ/Emcee and we attended an event at The Bee in Publika. We were just sitting down with Carson and having drinks waiting for the local bands to start playing when Guo Unn said hold on for a while because he wanted to talk to someone. From afar I saw him talking to this person like they were the best of friends or maybe an old friend that he hadn’t catch up with for years. When he came back to the table I asked him who is that friend of yours and he said “Oh no, I just met him. He is a famous person for recording and music etc” And I was like “WHAT. You don’t know him and you just went up there like nothing?” And my bf said, “Ya, I told him what I was doing and gave him my name card and he said he would be interested in working with me!”
That was YEARS back la ha 😛 I became an introvert as I became older but I force myself to realize that it is the last thing I should do when I am getting older. I should go out, network and meet new people all the time and do not ever be afraid!
Not only that, I realized networking is not all about your benefit but it could be an open door for you to make real friends as well! Real friends that you can click and talk about the things you both like! Until now I am so thankful for the friendships I have found through pole fitness, makeup, and baking!
I met a few Instagram friends like Jasmine who found me through Instagram and was interested in pole, and from then we became friends. Met @fishyee who was so sweet and she watched my makeup videos as well! Even through pole fitness, I manage to invite many friends who have always wanted to try pole and I manage to meet up old high school and primary school friends. In pole fitness, I met some girls whom I had so much fun with! It is healthy for you and also by meeting new people all the time when it comes to networking with someone related to what you want to do – you would have overcome your fear in meeting people already
3. Take action immediately and be CONSISTENT!!
You know when you want to start youtube, the most important thing is to not be afraid and do not delay so you would need to start right away. But what is more important is being consistent once you have started!
I have seen many people who have started but stopped halfway so you see it is not about the starting but about the journey. Even when I first started, nobody was really reading my blog and had such little views. To be honest I still do! I haven’t even reached 100 subscribers yet but I am still gonna keep doing what I am doing!
Now that I have chosen to start baking, I shouldn’t just wait for people to orders then only bake. I am already baking cakes to practice and learn to keep the energy and momentum rolling!
I may still be an assistant bridal makeup artist but whenever there is a chance I have to work and do makeup for a client, bridesmaids or etc and even if the pay is low I still take it!
Just make sure you don’t stop and keep doing things to keep the momentum there.
4. Take up new challenges to improve
Challenges are crucial for growth. I recently joined the NYX competition and regardless whether I win or not (Although of course, it would be nice to win) the most important thing is that you step out of your comfort zone. I am also joining my school competition so that I can push myself even more! I will be taking 3 different exams from my school and will plan to push myself further! If there are not exams and competitions, there will no be challenges. No challenges means no opportunity for you to grow and learn new things! Even if you are afraid, just do it! Just do your best and think of all the crazy things not being bothered about what others think
5. Be hardworking
Yes. You know probably some of my high school friends would not believe this. Not even my parents. When they see how I am now they still feel shocked with whatever I am doing! What, Elaine? The most laziest person in school that failed almost every exam except English, ponteng school, kena rotan alot, never finish a single homework, too lazy to do anything and copy everyone’s homework – even tried to pay someone to do homework for me. HAHAHHAA.
When you found something you love, it comes naturally. Homework doesn’t feel like homework. You will be hardworking but again it begins with willingness. How much will and drive do you have in yourself to push yourself? To be honest, survival is also another key to push you. If you have your parents giving you pocket money all the time and you do not need to think of survival most likely you will stay comfortable and not be hardworking. I am not saying this applies to all but just saying when you have to survive on your own it pushes you more than usual. Maybe yours works differently then you will need to find what pushes and what is able to push your conviction and will power.
So that’s it, guys. Lastly, I would like to say time management is also important.
I work in and out, go to school morning until evening. After class I go for pole and if no pole class it would be latin class or gym. (ALTHOUGH I have been slacking gym so sorry :P) and on weekends I have bridals jobs 5 am both days and evenings bridal jobs. Weekends nights 6 pm to 10 pm I would need to go to my dad restaurant and manage and then I need to find time to bake cakes, to plan a youtube video, to film and edit at the same time, prepare for the exam and extra dinner makeup jobs. Then I have to balance to spend time with family, board game nights with friends and spend time with my boyfriend as well! Although I am not leading a cell group in church now, I will need to make sure I plan my time for cell group and church service too!
How do I do it? To be honest, ANYBODY can do it. It is just whether you CHOOSE to do it. It may be tiring but yes I thank God for strength and that he increases my capacity to be able to juggle all these.
Life is too short to do so little things. Life is too short to stay at home on weekends to do nothing. Life is too short to just go home after work. Go out and explore! Do things you love. Discover a talent you have not discovered yet!
Before I saw goodbye till the next post, here are some my favorite fashion picks, as you know I am a big fan of Boho style and patterns. I guess you could stay my style is either VERY minimalist or with huge PRINTS and patterns.
